My 2020 Political Strategy

My goal is to elect as many Democrats to all levels of office as possible. Also, I prefer progressive candidates and seek to replace a few Democratic incumbents I find particularly disappointing with progressive candidates I find particularly amazing. I also aim to make each incremental dollar I contribute have as much impact as possible.

Strategy Overview – Elect as Many Democrats to All Levels of Office as Possible

2020 is a presidential election year. This means that all forms of media advertising are saturated from presidential campaigns. Experts are predicting close to $10 billion dollars in advertising in 2020. This saturation is also exacerbated in the short term since the Democrats are fielding 20+ candidates and the whittling criteria from the debates around donations and polls further increases the incentives these candidates to spend on advertisements, driving up the costs for each other and candidates at all levels. Most of the candidates have gobs of money, so this spend will continue. My strategy is based on a few inferences from 2020 being a Presidential cycle and all the rampant media buying:
  1. The turnout will be high
    1. Strong voter base turnout is a guarantee
    2. Voter bases, regardless of Presidential decisions, mostly vote for their existing party across all elections
  2. The general platform of the Democrats should be well known due to the Presidential campaign advertisements
  3. The incremental cost of political advertising is higher since the demand is higher (see supply and demand)
  4. The incremental value of registering someone to vote is higher because
    1. Inference one means we need new voters to win
    2. Inference two means we don’t need to work hard on educating these newly registered voters
    3. Turns out the cost of registering new voters is not necessarily tied to political advertising cost
  5. The incremental value of getting out the vote is higher because
    1. Inference one means we need new voters to win
    2. Inference two means we don’t need to work too hard on education
    3. Turns out the cost of get out the vote efforts are not necessarily tied to political advertising cost
Based on these inferences and aiming to maximize each incremental dollar, my strategy is to contribute to efforts in descending priority for
  1. Voter Registration
  2. Candidate Generation – Democrats need to field viable candidate in every race
  3. Election Security – we need to make sure our voters are fairly registered and our votes are fairly cast and counted
  4. State Committees = Voter Registration + Candidate Generation + Election Security + Local Secret Sauce
  5. Getting out the Vote
    1. Specific orgs TBD Q4 2019 and Q1 2020
  6. Candidates for State Governments
    1. Specific candidates TBD Q4 2019 and Q1 2020
  7. Candidates for the House
    1. Ongoing
  8. Candidates for the Senate
    1. Ongoing
  9. My top choice for President

Strategy Overview – Push for Progressive Candidates

I was very aggressive in the 2018 cycle with one specific goal – to flip the House. This was necessary to me to have basic and necessary accountability of the executive branch while also being the most viable path to breaking the Republican legislative and executive majority. While that goal was achieved, I have been disappointed in the performance of the Democratic lead house. I thus support progressive candidates in some primaries against Democrat incumbents. I hope that they win and if they don’t win they are persuasive to the incumbent to become more progressive themselves. I believe this one, two combination of potential impact makes these investments more than worthwhile. I also support the Justice Democrats. One way to describe them is The Squad is actually part of the larger crew of the Justice Democrats. I think of them as a party within a party who prioritize justice in all its forms first and foremost; those Democrats that lead with ethics and integrity, always doing the right thing to help bring equality of opportunity ever closer. Someday I hope all Democrats will be Justice Democrats.
